Home Hospital

Support Beyond the Classroom

Providing continuity, care, and connection for students with medical or mental health needs.

The Home Hospital Program ensures students facing extended medical or mental health challenges continue receiving high-quality instruction while they recover. Through personalized support, certified teachers, and strong collaboration with families and healthcare providers, we help students stay on track academically—without losing their connection to school.

Our goal is to provide a bridge between home and school so that every student has the opportunity to heal, learn, and return with confidence.

For more information or to begin the referral process, please contact our Home Hospital staff today.

The Home Hospital application must be submitted to Central Office.

Please ensure all required documentation is included before submission. For questions or assistance, contact the Director of Pupil Personnel office at (859) 744-4545.

Home Hospital or Cardinal Virtual Academy?

While both programs offer learning outside of the traditional classroom, Home Hospital and Cardinal Virtual Academy (CVA) are designed for very different student needs.

Home Hospital is a short-term, medically-based program for students who are unable to attend school for five or more consecutive days due to a documented medical or mental health condition. Students in this program receive one-on-one instruction—typically at home or in a hospital setting—from a certified teacher. The goal is to provide academic support during a time of recovery, with the expectation that the student will return to regular school when they are well enough.

  • Requires medical documentation and district approval

  • Instruction is limited (typically 1 hour per core subject per week)

  • Designed for temporary health-related absences

Cardinal Virtual Academy (CVA) is a long-term virtual learning program for students who thrive in an online or hybrid learning environment. It is not based on medical need but on student learning preferences, family flexibility, or other personal reasons. Students in CVA follow a full online curriculum, participate in live virtual meetings, and complete assignments independently with teacher support.

  • Open to students who benefit from a flexible, non-traditional learning model

  • Includes regular assignments, progress tracking, and virtual instruction

  • Designed for full-time, semester or year-long enrollment

In short:

  • Home Hospital = medical support, short-term, limited instruction

  • CVA = learning preference, long-term, full curriculum online
